in secretary clinton's case it's on the right side of the head the right side here. i will so you the left side for the sake of demonstration here. if i remove the hemisphere of the brain, you can see where the veins are. see the blue area right in there, that's the area that is draining blood away from the brain and one of the veins in this area is where that clot actually has occurred. most likely due to a combination of the head trauma she what few weeks ago and in addition to the fact she is had a problem with blood clots in the past dating back to 1998. we are hearing from her doctors who says she is on blood thinners and is is awake and talking and most importantly there's no evidence of stroke or neurological damage. my guess is they will continue to monitor her for another couple days in the hospital and probably get another scan at some point to make sure that clot is dissolved as result of the blood thinner medications. as we get more details we will bring them to you. back to you for now. >> clinton was scheduled to return to work this week after a stomach

we have a lot of news to talk about this thursday, january 3rd including an update on hillary clinton following that health scare that landed her in the hospital for several days. plus, we'll have a live report from cnbc where the markets sure seem to like the agreement out of washington, d.c., even if a lot of lawmakers there didn't. that's where we're going to begin with that story. president obama has signed into law the legislation passed by congress to raise tax rates for higher earners, extends tax cuts for middle class and extends unemployment benefits for many americans. the president reviewed a copy of the bill while vacationing in hawaii before directing that it be signed by autopen. that is the signature side board that president uses to sign legislation when they're away from washington. so much for the big bipartisan signing ceremony that many envisioned. back in the capitol, there are several major issues that await the president's return including that big impending fight over the debt ceiling. wednesday the president released a new video explaining his budget strategy

that picture really caught that image of what appears to be a distraught chelsea clinton. she was leaving the hospital after the visit with her mom. she tweeted out a message thanking people for their support. "thank you to all for sending good thoughts my mom's way. grateful to all her doctors and that she'll make a full recovery." the doctors for their part say there's no evidence of a stroke or any neurological damage with regard to this clot near her brain. jill dougherty is live at the state department. a lot of people want to know how she's doing. clearly she has an important role. do we know if her progress is getting better or are they keeping us abreast? >> they haven't issued anything today but yesterday they did -- her two doctors issued a report. it was pretty in-depth. at least technical explaining where the blood clot was located and what they were doing is giving blood thinners. it's important to point out it's not on the brain itself. it's between the brain and the skull. so it's actually kind of an area in a way that vein is isolated from the actual brain.

truman, eisenhower, reagan, clinton, and bush. we're including truman because even though he wasn't elected in 1944, he took over after fdr died just three months into his term. nixon is out before he resigned before the second midterm shellacking. let's put up the numbers. in truman's second term, let's take a look here, as you can see, in that midterm in 9050, his democratic party lost 28 seats in the house, 6 in the senate. in ike's second term in 1958, the gop got wiped out, losing 48 house seats, 13 senate seats. reagan, '86, republicans lost 5 seats in the house, 8 seats in the senate. i'll tell you about that in a minute. but it cost republicans control of the senate in the process. president clinton, of course, is the big outlier here, if you'll recall. he didn't lose anything in the second midterm, winning five house seats for his party, staying even in the senate. eight years later, president bush got hammered, losing 30 seats in the house, 6 in the senate, but control of both houses were gone from republicans. a couple
